L.A. Two-Wheeled Campout THIS WEEKEND!

Here's the 411 on this weekend's L.A. Two-Wheeled Campout Rally:

L.A. TWO-WHEELED CAMP-OUT – JUNE 10, 2006
(info updated 06/04/06):

Los Angeles/Angeles National Forest, CA

This was posted by Eddie A., on the scooter BBS:

“More details later, but here's what’s going on......

My friends and I have secured a private camp ground for June 10th in the Angeles National Forest. It has space for up 120 people. Camping spots with fire pits and toilets. But no running water! I guess the faucets I saw busted a long time ago!

This going to be more like a two wheel social event, with a strong scooter influence. It's also being geared towards vintage motorcycle riders. Kinda of like a mods vs rockers, but camping!

We were originally planning a simple "get up and go" camp out with a few friends. Half our friends ride old cafe style motorcycles and the others vintage scooters. So it was like screw it! Lets just get a private camp ground, so we don't get kicked out again!

But really, if you have a vintage Restored classic scooter, 50's rocket car with a motorcycle motor, a junk Frankenstein Vespa, retro classic Piaggio, Norton that rolls up hills!, Honda SS whatever with clubman bars, I guess anything European is alright too. Or any pre-1976 rat trap that you think might make it, as long as you flipped the stock bars upside down, then OK you can come!

Oh, we're cool with the new retro bikes too. Basically this is a two wheel social event and if that sounds like something your into, then ride up and hang for half the day or camp!

UPDATED ITINERARY (06/04/06):

Friday June 9th Meet and Greet!

Meet and greet at Chango's coffee shop in Echo park from 9pm till 11pm. If your not going to the camp out, then try and make it out Friday night! A party will follow afterward at my house nearby in Silver Lake!

Party BYOB: 2111 Apex Ave., Los Angeles CA 90039

The cool hipster shops around Changos will be open too, so you can take a peek inside! It's kind of like a little block party. Plus you can check out all the cool two wheeled machines!

If you want some ride time under your belt then, meet at the Bourgeois Pig in Hollywood and ride with the reflections scooter club. Remember they leave at 9pm sharp on a short ride, then to Changos ! Check out their website for more information.

Changos coffee shop is at: 1559 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90026

Saturday June 10th Camping!

Admission and what you get!
$10 per person to camp over night
$5 per person afternoon visit

As long as supplies last we'll try and provide you with: 1 Patch, 1 Raffle ticket, Hot dogs and Burgers (limited Veggie burgers), Bottled water

At the bottom! Please read info about parking your car in Los Angeles, campground info, driving your car up and whatever crap I can think of!

Motorcycles meet at Glory. Ride leaves 11am sharp (this may change). 4659 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, Ca 90027, (323)644-5679; http://www.glorysales.com

P.S. Please try and have loose $1 and $5 bills, unless you don't mind acorns and pine cones for change.

If you want to cruise or you have an old timer bike, then the scooter ride isn't a bad idea. They'll be taking surface streets all the way up to Angeles Crest Hwy, then straight up to the campsite! Their ride is short, but a little slower!

The motorcycle ride will have some up hill freeway miles too!.

Scooters Meet at Eatz Cafe. Ride leaves at 11am sharp (this may change). This place takes "cash only" and please save some change for us at the campground, bust your twenty's here!! Eatz Café, 3207 Los Feliz Blvd., Los Angeles, Ca 90039-1508

Need a place to stash your truck? Keep reading below......

Wanna ride faster? Then the motorcycle ride might be for you, just don't get in any ones way! Some freeway miles and "yes" a fuel stop before entering Big Tujanga Canyon, it links with Angeles Crest Hwy and up to the campground... We know you can give them a run for their money..

Sunday June 11th return home.

We'll have some sort of organized ride back home around noonish, after the clean up........

Important! Please read before you jump in your car, truck or bike!

Bandido Camp Grounds

This is a really cool camp ground that holds 130 campers. The site has 4 bathrooms, but no running water! Even though we will have bottled water, it's not a bad idea to bring a quart of water for yourself! If you need a bathroom with running water Newcombs ranch is open until 10pm and a couple of miles away!

There are many little fire rings at this campsite. I would suggest everyone to bring a small fire log with them! A small log will go a long way! Do not bring a chainsaw to dice fallen trees! That is not allowed at this park! Twigs and sticks are Ok. Also you'll need camping gear, remember wild animals live here! Use common sense and keep your food out of your tent!

We'll provide firewood for the main camp fire only and power for music!

...Scroll to the bottom for directions...

Parking your vehicle before the camp ride:

I understand some people will truck their bikes down, I can only suggest parking your car/truck at the Glendale metrolink parking lot. It has video surveillance and 24 hour security patrol. I would think this might be better than leaving your car in the streets of Los Angeles.

I also suggest you to unload your bike around the corner, then drive your vehicle into the parking lot. This would save you any harassment from the security guards and the parking lot allows 72 hour parking. So your good for the whole weekend! Heads up! Only two of the three parking lots are 72 hour free parking. Also this is nearby Eatz, the Scooter Meeting spot.

Glendale Metrolink parking lot, 400w Cerritos Ave., Glendale, CA 91204

People driving up to the campsite in trucks/cars and early birds!

It's a group campground, that has limited parking space! I would suggest people try and carpool together! When the Campground lot is full, we will still allow people to enter to drop off their gear and supplies. But you will have to park your vehicle at the second parking lot, that is a long walk away! So riding your scooter/ motorcycle will pay off!

Showing up early won't get you early access, but not a bad idea to beat traffic! We won't allow people to enter the campground until one or both groups show up, except people bringing in Rally supplies etc...

I can suggest people to wait at New Combs Ranch Dinner. It's three miles before the camp road turn off and it's the only restaurant/sports bar on the Angeles Crest Hwy! It's a real nice place to chill, with pool tables, food, Large T.V. (World Cup Fans!) and things to look at. Once you see the bikes and scooters you can follow them to the camp grounds, you'll hear and see them pass by!

How to get to the Camp Ground
Go North on the Glendale (2) Freeway Go East (right) on the Foothill (210) Freeway Exit at the first off-ramp, La Canada/Flintridge, Angeles Crest Highway Turn Left off the ramp and go 27 miles into Angeles National Forest. Newcomb's Ranch will appear on your left side.

The campsite is 2-3 miles pass Newcombs, look for the small sign! You make a left at the sign. Drive down 2 miles pass the Christian camp (don't enter their road). After that the campsite won't be hard to miss!

Newcomb's website has a map, You'll pass one ranger information station on the way up. You can stop there to look at their map. You'll be looking for Bandido camp grounds.

Newcombs website has a map and directions: http://www.newcombsranch.com

Price will be $10 overnight / $5 afternoon visit

For sure a DJ or two will be spinning! As well as food, drinks and a raffle!!

So, mark your calendars for June 10th 2006! Summer camp out in in/near Los Angeles! It's going to be something like a 30-40 mile ride from say Los Feliz in L.A. to the camp site!

60th Anniversary Vespa?

So, Vespa has come out with a 60th anniversary scooter. Don't know how it makes you feel, but I both like and dislike the fenderlight headlight. I like that it harkens back to Vespas early years, but dislike how it seems like such a desperate and not useful nostalgia item... I do like the pillion seat (also a throwback to the original Vespas), but the rest of the scooter looks like an LX150...

See for yourself and get more info at this webpage.

30% of Americans consider scooters

From an article on PowersportsBusiness.com:

Survey: 30% of Commuters Consider Scooters
As gas prices soar to record highs, a survey released last month indicated that 30 percent of U.S. consumers would be “extremely” or “somewhat likely” to use a scooter for their everyday transportation needs.

According to the survey, conducted in the first week of May by ICR on behalf of Piaggio Group Americas, queried individuals indicated a willingness to transfer 35 percent of their weekly mileage to a scooter. The survey also found that 33 percent of respondents would be likely to use a scooter to reduce emission harmful to the environment, and 35 percent would be likely to use a scooter to save $25 a week on gasoline.

Piaggio leadership said comparing the results of the survey to Department of Energy national averages for fuel consumption and emissions shows that if Americans were to utilize one of the scooters available in the market today, they could, in aggregate, reduce national fuel consumption by 14 million gallons of gasoline per day and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 324 million lbs. per day.

Scooters were defined in the survey as two-wheel vehicles that can reach 40mph to 100mph and have an average cost of $2,000 or above.
